Before the 1600’s black people were portrayed by European artists as noble sophisticated and intelligent. This portrayal matche the known reality of African civilisation art and culture. With the rise of kidnap, muurder and forced labour via the slave “trade” this images declined or were destroyed and replaced by debased stereotypes.
